March 2025: Global Community Impact

World Water Day inspired a school community event on clean water and water-saving efforts in Vietnam

Responding to World Water Day on March 22, Gravity Water coordinated with the Department of Education and Training of Dien Bien Dong district to organize community activities on clean water and water-saving efforts at Keo Lom Primary School.

380 Jeo Lom Primary school students participated in this World Water Activity Day, creating colorful art posters to visualize what they learned about clean water and the importance of good water hygiene. In addition, nearly 60 delegates from different provinces and district agencies joined the festivities.

At the event, students engaged in hands-on activities focused on water conservation and proper handwashing with soap and clean water. Through these practical experiences and with guidance from their teachers, students gained awareness and skills to maintain water hygiene and use water responsibly in their daily lives.

This community impact event was made possible through a carefully crafted action plan by the Gravity Water team and the passionate collaboration and unwavering support of local partners, from provincial leaders and district education departments to the dedicated schools that brought the project to life. This event was a huge success, and we plan to host more community educational events like this in the future.

Global community impact in the past 30 days

  • Nepal: 24 new Zero Waste Water Treatment Systems (ZWWTS) were installed, providing 14,235 new beneficiaries. 30 WASH Education school programs were implemented. Continued maintenance checks happened at 42 sites, and water testing at 50 schools.

  • Vietnam: 24 new installations were completed in Dien Bien with 8229 new beneficiaries. Community consultation meetings occurred in 10 household clusters in Dien Bien Dong, Tuan Giao, and Tua Chia districts.

  • Indonesia: Established Happy Hearts Indonesia (HHI) as our In-country implementation partner, identified priority regions within the Citarum Watershed for school selection, and trained HHI staff on Gravity Water’s site assessment and school selection process.

  • Malaysia: Focus on Kelantan and Johor initiatives.

Gravity Water's new Rainwater Harvesting Initiative in Indonesia is off to a strong start

Gravity Water’s collaboration with Happy Hearts Indonesia (HHI) is underway. With years of experience working directly with schools across the Citarum Watershed, HHI brings valuable local knowledge and trusted relationships to the partnership, making them an ideal ally in launching this new rainwater harvesting initiative in West Java.

Building on this foundation, HHI staff have now been fully trained in Gravity Water’s rainwater harvesting approach, including protocols for site assessments and school engagement. Throughout March, the team has been actively conducting assessments at schools across the region to identify locations where the need for a sustainable water source is most urgent.

This groundwork marks an important step in preparing for the installation of 50 rainwater harvesting systems, which will provide climate-resilient water access to schools across the watershed. As the program moves forward, the partnership between Gravity Water and HHI continues to demonstrate the power of locally rooted collaboration in scaling impact across Indonesia.

Empowering communities through rain: the impact of Gravity Water’s rainwater harvesting in Malaysia

In the face of increasing water scarcity and climate unpredictability, data from the Malaysia Rainwater Harvesting Initiative is sending a clear message: rainwater harvesting is not just a solution—it’s a necessity. The findings validate the critical role these systems play in providing communities with a more consistent and climate-resilient water supply.

In Kelantan, Gravity Water’s rainwater harvesting initiative is making significant strides. To date, 42 rainwater harvesting systems have been installed across the region, offering reliable access to clean water for 22,248 students and 2,104 teachers. Many of these schools have faced persistent challenges due to frequent water supply disruptions. Now, thanks to these systems, students and educators can focus more on learning and less on whether water will be available.

Since the start of the initiative, these systems have successfully harvested over 1.6 million liters of rainwater—an invaluable resource, especially during the dry season when water becomes even more scarce.

Meanwhile, in Johor Bahru, March saw slower developments due to fasting and religious celebrations. However, April brings renewed momentum. Gravity Water is preparing to break ground on its next phase, supported by Cloudwell, the organization's social enterprise arm. Cloudwell is currently setting up local operations in Johor to roll out Gravity Water’s latest innovation: the RainBox—a scalable, efficient rainwater harvesting solution designed to bring even more schools into a future of safe and sustainable water access.

This upcoming expansion marks an important milestone in Gravity Water’s mission to provide clean water access through sustainable, community-based solutions. With every drop collected, we’re helping schools build resilience in the face of water insecurity and climate change.

Stay tuned as we continue expanding our impact and supporting more communities throughout Malaysia—because every child deserves reliable access to clean water.

Water Testing in Nepal

Celebrating Nepal schools putting students' health first through clean water access

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible schools that are going above and beyond to ensure students have access to clean, purified water every day. By prioritizing students’ health and well-being—without compromise—these schools are setting a powerful example of care, responsibility, and long-term impact.

A key milestone in this journey was Gravity Water Nepal completing a water testing program in the Kavrepalanchok District. Conducted in partnership with Kathmandu Uptyaka Khanepani Limited (Water/Wastewater Quality Assurance Division), the testing results served as both confirmation of need and a powerful tool for awareness-building.

The water testing program has had a significant impact by:

  • Educating students and communities on the value of pure water and the potential health risks of consuming untreated or unsafe water.

  • Identifying harmful contaminants, ensuring students have access to safe, clean drinking water that helps prevent waterborne illnesses.

  • Clarifying the differences between existing water sources and filtered water, reinforcing the importance of water purification.

  • Reducing illness-related absences, leading to improved academic performance and healthier school environments.

  • Ensuring water quality meets national safety standards, contributing to better public health and aligning with Nepal's broader health policy goals.

Through this initiative, Gravity Water Nepal has made a measurable difference across multiple districts—upgrading outdated water filtration systems, introducing our Zero Wastewater Treatment Systems (ZWWTS), and implementing ongoing maintenance and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) education programs.

These efforts are more than just technical upgrades—they're transformational. Cleaner water has led to better health outcomes, increased school attendance, and a deeper understanding among students of the importance of hygiene and sanitation. Meanwhile, regular maintenance and water quality monitoring continue to strengthen long-term system reliability.

None of this would be possible without the unwavering commitment of local partners, district education offices, and especially the schools themselves. Their dedication to ensuring safe water access and health education for students is laying the foundation for a stronger, healthier future.

Together, we’re not just delivering clean water—we’re empowering a generation with the tools and knowledge to build healthier communities.
